Pierpont Farms is a locally owned and operated small scale vegetable farm located just outside the city limits of Columbia, Missouri with the goal of providing high quality and delicious produce to our community through sustainable farming.
We grow a wide variety of produce including:
- heirloom, slicing and cherry tomatoes
- kale, swiss chard, collards and other greens
- peppers (many varieties)
- summer squash
- winter squash
- sweet potatoes
- carrots, beets and other root crops
- sugar snap peas
- Lots of others!
Some of the sustainable practices we use on our farm include crop rotation, cover cropping, and composting which help build healthy soil (and therefore healthy produce!). For pests, we utilize beneficial insects and use only chemical-free pesticides when needed. We created a water catchment system by adding a pond whose water we pump through drip irrigation which minimizes water usage, allowing it to be directed straight to the roots of the plant. We are also currently working on lowering our plastic use.
How we grow our produce
We have three high tunnels which help with season extension and protect plants from the vagaries of weather. We also have three Haygrove tunnels which are covered with plastic on the top and are used as three season tunnels. We grow in outside fields as well and on average grow on 2-3 acres each year.
The farm started out with a CSA and slowly grew over the years. In 2006, a pond for watering was put in. In 2008, a greenhouse and the first of three high tunnels were built; two more high tunnels and three Haygrove tunnels were later added. Today, we no longer have the CSA, but sell wholesale to local businesses including restaurants, grocery stores and institutions.
We truly enjoy providing Columbia with local, quality produce and welcome input from our customers.
